What's This Bitch Talking About? Ted
Deep breath. We gotta do it, but after tonight, "Ted" goes in the Official Buffy Vault to be locked away never to be seen (by me) again because it's TRIGGERING af. It's the scariest episode of Buffy EVER. Giles puts it perfectly-- "subtext is rapidly becoming text".

"Reptile Boy" is an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer that hits you over the head with "morality", penis metaphors, and little moments of sometimes-buoyant-mostly-overburdened-with-emotion character development. Hear me talk about it below, if you want.

What's This Bitch Talking About? ep 34 & iPod Mini Upgrade Video
Above you shall find my new episode of "What's This Bitch Talking About?" podcast that I recorded Thursday. This podcast episode, even MORE so than usual, is just an aimless ramble-fest mostly about things that are frustrating me about the transition to the new library.
Above you shall find my most recent video uploaded to YouTube in which I, in real time, take apart my new iPod mini and replace both the battery and the 4GB hard drive with 200GB Compact Flash memory. It's the iPod repair video of an amateur booger queen. It's messy, there are no close-ups, and sometimes the iPod isn't even in the shot! But hey, I did a thing and I put it to video. Watch it if ya wanna.

Thank YOU for listening to my Buffy episodes of the podcast during this first season of my seven-year project of watching every episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer exactly 20 years after their original airdates. I went back to my ex...
![]() |
This is Strict_Machine, my iPod (6th gen) |
I bought a Creative Nomad Zen Xtra in 2003. It had 60GB of storage. I digitized all my CDs in 128kbps because I didn't know any better yet. Luckily, I kept my CDs. In 2009 I got an orange iPod Nano. The 160GB beauty in the image to your left was acquired in January of 2011. In February, by some divine intervention (was it because I had more space on this new iPod?), I decided to re-digitized all my CDs in 320kbps. Less than three months later, most of my physical media was destroyed in the Great Wind of May 2011. I found the iPod under my dresser, wet and covered in insulation. But it still works to this day!
Despite our history, six months ago I left my iPod for a Fiio X3 II. I liked the Fiio, but that damn thing took hours and sometimes DAYS to sync. The initial sync with the Fiio, my iTunes, and a program called Dapper took 3-5 days. This one time, my iTunes deleted ALL the playlists I had put in a special folder for my Fiio to be able to recognize them. I had to recreate about 50 playlists in my iTunes. Thankfully, I have all my mixes written in a special mix journal, so that headache was more about time than anything. In the end, the Fiio was just too big of a pain in the ass. This week I wrenched my iPod back from my Michael and sold the Fiio. Hello, old friend.
Here's a list of things about my iPod that I really missed:
1. being able to use the many iPod docks in my house
2. volume control on headphones
3. on-the-go playlists
4. podcasts
5. audiobooks
6. lastFM stats
7. album shuffle
8. syncs that take less than five minutes instead of a few hours/days
If you want to see an even longer explanation of my iPod praises/Fiio woes, go to here.
What's This Bitch Talking About? ep 30 and How I Met Buffy the Vampire Slayer
There wasn't an episode of Buffy 20 years ago this week, so I recorded a little ramble session about how I came to know the show. I feel like I grew up with Buffy (the character) because she's just two years older than me. Anyway, if ya wanna hear me talk about THAT for 45 minutes, listen to the podcast. :D
Next week: "I Robot, You Jane"!! We get to meet Jenny Calendar and get that infamous quote from Giles about book-smelling. Can't wait!

Tascam Mic Test Video
I recently acquired a Tascam Dr-05 which is a pretty fancy audio recording device. I also recently acquired a toy video camera (Tyco VideoCam) that I used to borrow from my little sister alot back in the late '90s. It was the WORST quality, and somehow this new one is even worser-er. It's real bad. So naturally, I made a video with it and uploaded it to YouTube. See evidence above. Good quality audio with terrifically bad quality video. You're welcome.

The time has FINALLY come for me to start my Buffy project I conceived around two years ago. March 10, 2017 marks the 20 year anniversary of the airing of the first and second episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I am watching each episode exactly 20 years after it originally aired. This will be a project that takes me 7 years to complete. I. am. so. excited!!!!!!!!

Chick Habit: a mix
"Ashes to ashes, dust to side chicks."
This is a mix inspired by Beyonce's "Lemonade" album, one of the most moving and incredible pieces of visual art I've ever seen.
The official best audio version of this mix will be played on Friday (February 24th) radio show from 7-11pm CST. Tune in via the little player to your right, here, or on Tune In apps.

I break my silence on Toddler Tyrant, kind of. I also do some more babbling about The Cure, my VHS adventures, and my new tattoo. The album of the week is Veruca Salt's "Eight Arms to Hold You" which I just realized, as an adult, is about trying to keep a junkie alive and in a relationship with you. Creepy.
Listen to it if you want...

VHS Music Videos
^^^ This is a collection of music videos done at approximately age 12 by me, my Kim, my Xine, and my Angie. We recorded these videos during a sleepover in 1994 or 1995.
^^^ This is a collection of exclusively Garbage music videos recorded with my friend Xine in 1996 or 1997. My favorite music video in the world that I have ever recorded (and I've recorded a LOT) starts at 4min in.
^^^ This is a collection of music videos recorded by Xine and me again, this time I believe we're looking at spring or summer of 1997, the last of the music videos recorded on the Tyco Videocam (that I'm allowed to release, anyway. I have a few done by my Kim and me, but she won't let me upload them online. Prude! *winky face*).
I'm really proud of the innovation and creativity we used in making these videos at such a young age. We learned essential video-recording techniques such as using the monitor to frame shots instead of the viewfinder and using bright lights behind the camera for cool over-exposed lighting effects. When I was about this age I wanted to be a music video director when I grew up.
I'm thinking of buying that crappy Tyco Videocam again from ebay. It sells for less than $20 NIB. Even though the quality is real bad, it has Nostalgia Factor BIG TIME for me and I'd love to use it for future YouTube videos. If you'd like to contribute: paypal.me/mixtressrae

What's This Bitch Talking About? ep 18
Here's the podcast. It's missing some stuff. I've had a really rough week and the podcast reflects that. I kind of wimped out. I had a segment recorded in which I outline my anxious/nightmarish week sponsored by hormones and brain chemistry, but I axed it, so you won't hear it this week. Also, my phone ate my segment on "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert".
It's been a comedically bad week, okay? Who wants to buy me a drink? gift me a Xanax? Buy me some ice cream? no one? Ok, fine. I'll do better next week. I promise.

Fiio X3II/Dapper for Mac Review
This is a video I did for my YouTube channel reviewing my Fiio X3II DAP (Digital Audio Player) after having it for about two weeks. I also go into the usability of the Dapper for Mac program I use to sync my DAP with my iTunes library, which is the best option I know of for syncing music to a DAP when you have a Mac and are used to using iTunes to sync with iPod-type DAPs. I did film this video back in October. Since then, Dapper has come out with several updates to make their program faster and more usable.

Mixtress Rae reflects on 2016, makes predictions/resolutions for 2017 and flashes back to her predictions/resolutions for 2016. She is also sick, so this is a shorter episode, because her voice and coherent thoughts are not so good.

MixtressRae's top Pop Culture Things of 2016
Above is a playlist of my top 50 songs that I listened to this year, not including selections from Beyonce's "Lemonade" because she refuses to share (her recent music isn't on Spotify where this mix lives)! Many songs are not from this year but I listened to them alot and I like them.
Below are a few more stats of pop culture I loved the most in 2016.
Top 4 Books:

*Jem and the Holograms, Volume 1 -- This book has great art, inclusivity out the wazoo and is super fun and light and colorful.
*Porcelain // Moby -- This was a great portrait of underground dance music in NYC in the '80s. Moby created a GIGANTIC playlist with all the music he mentions in the book on Spotify in the order he mentions it and I just think that's the coolest thing ever.
*Graceling // Kristin Cashore -- Fun young adult fantasy novel that has a love story element that doesn't piss me off. That's rare. The dude is cute, cool, and respects all boundaries set by chick. The protagonist is badass and not at all annoying. She sort of reminds me of a less-damaged version of Katniss.
*Paid For // Rachel Moran -- This is an extremely painful first-person memoir about the life of a sex worker. While I recognize that her story isn't every sex worker's story, I imagine the anguish she was subjected to in her ten (? it may have been 15?) years on the streets is probably the norm in that industry. This book was really hard to read and I cried a LOT while reading it, but it gave me a perspective I think I needed to be a more empathic human. My full review here.
Top 4 Movies That Came Out in 2016:
*Deadpool -- This film is snarky, sexy, and full of references to Wham.
*Ghostbusters -- Super fun film from Paul Feig.

*Sisters -- I was initially underwhelmed by this Tina Fey/Amy Poehler movie but it gets more hilarious with every rewatch. It's funny and weird.
Top 5 Albums:
1. Drei // EMIKA -- To me, this album feels like a journey through and out of abuse. EMIKA is an artist with a big BIG range through genre. Her talents are immense. This particular album is electronic, dark, melodic, and just fucking gorgeous.
2. Dream Sequins // NMESH -- This is the ultimate vaporwave. Get into it.
3. Hounds of Love // Kate Bush -- This album has been in my consciousness since I was a toddler, but this year I ripped it from my DNA, re-examined it, then stitched it back in with new understandings of its depths. I am the lamenting feminist in "Running Up That Hill". I am the blackbird in "Waking the Witch". I am the spirit in "Watching You Without Me". "Hounds of Love" is finally on Spotify. If you've never experienced this masterpiece, don't go another day without these hounds. They'll haunt you in the best possible way.
4. Art Angels // Grimes -- Truly her best achievement so far. Danceable, ethereal, dark and ballsy.
5. Long Ambients: Calm. Sleep. // Moby -- This album is hours of spacey sort-of dark ambient music Moby is giving away for free.
Top 5 Songs:
1. My Heart Bleeds Melody // EMIKA -- I might get a tattoo based on the title of this song. I had this thought the first time I heard it, which was the first time I heard EMIKA ever. It was love at first listen. I'll let the idea gestate for a couple of years, but I'm pretty sure the words "my heart bleeds melody" need to be on my skin forever.
2. Waking the Witch // Kate Bush -- This song completely slays me. I'm basing a tattoo idea on the content of this song. I think it will end up covering my entire back with blackbirds and witchyness. It is one of my top 10 songs of all time.
3. Trust No Bitch // Junksista -- This year our husky broke out of our backyard and attacked a neighborhood dog. She was taken in by the dog police and Michael and I had to go to court on her behalf. One of the things the Animal Control guy told us was that you can't trust your dogs, ever. This song was discovered during this time period thanks to a suggestion from my friend Ruben and well, it seemed fitting.
4. Iman // Niyaz -- I think this is the most spiritual, meditative song I've ever heard. If I sit zazen/shiva/moderate-meditative-pose while listening to this song, I get real calm, yo. Reallllll calm.
5. White Pepper Ice Cream // Cibo Matto -- Have loved this song since 1996 but it was only this year that I realized it is my favorite song of all time. I don't know what else to say. It's my jam. Please listen to it if you want to hear a sound landscape that lights up my entire brain with aural nirvana.
